CHECKMATED

'Tis the ultimate game of chess,

Fame, glory or power, I seek not;

Her heart's the only treasure I chase,

Fallen from grace, yet differs from the lot.

The crafty pro battling a novice,

Her moves are all but calculated;

Is this my chance to break the ice?

'Tis the moment I've speculated.

The game's tense as the battle wore,

I've seen land but I'm far from shore;

Showed me the route, but controlled the tides,

And her sly mind behind a smile she hides.

As each move dismantled my defence,

With each word she tore me apart;

Tho' I wish to see the game through her lens,

The king's checkmated, I must depart.

The king's checkmated, so is my heart.
